Minecraft Text Generator

Type your text, give each piece a color and a style, and copy a ready tellraw, title or action bar command.

Each row is one piece of text with its own color and style.

Commands

Runs entirely in your browser. Your data never leaves your device.

How to use it

  1. Type the text of the first part and pick a color. Use custom hex for any color in Java.
  2. Add more parts for a different color or style in the same line.
  3. Check the preview. It shows the colors and styles you picked.
  4. Copy the command you want and paste it into the game chat or a command block. Cheats must be on.

How text components work

In Java, text in commands is a text component. It is an object with a text key and optional style keys: color, bold, italic, underlined, strikethrough and obfuscated. Several parts go in an array. The first element of the array is an empty string, so that the style of one part does not leak into the next.

The color is either one of the sixteen names, like gold, or a hex code in quotes, like "#ff8800". Hex colors work since Java 1.16. The generator checks the color and writes the quotes and brackets for you, so you cannot lose a comma.

A worked example

You want the message Welcome, Steve! in the chat, where the first word is bold gold and the name is aqua. Make two parts: Welcome, in gold with bold on, and Steve! in aqua. The tool writes /tellraw @a ["",{"text":"Welcome, ","color":"gold","bold":true},{"text":"Steve!","color":"aqua"}]. Paste it into a command block set to repeat, and it greets everyone.

Java and Bedrock

  • Java. Uses text components. Supports hex colors, underline and strikethrough.
  • Bedrock. Uses a rawtext array and the section sign codes for color and style. No hex colors, no underline and no strikethrough. The tool warns you when your text uses something Bedrock cannot show.

Where to use it

  • Command blocks. Welcome messages, rule reminders and shop signs.
  • Titles. A big title for events such as the start of a round.
  • Action bar. A short hint above the hotbar that does not fill the chat.
  • Data packs and maps. The text component line is what datapack functions and many map tools expect.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting the empty first element. Without it a bold part can make the next part bold too.
  • Using § in Java chat. It is not allowed there. Use the component form. For § codes see the color codes page.
  • Wrong quotes in a command block. Paste the command exactly. Do not replace the straight quotes with curly ones.
  • A hex code without a hash. Write #ff8800, not ff8800.

Sources and notes

Command syntax follows the Minecraft Wiki page on /tellraw, checked on 27 October 2026. The wiki notes that since snapshot 25w02a (1.21.5) text components are written in SNBT and that both forms work. The preview uses a plain font, not the game font. Frequently asked questions

How do I make colored text in Minecraft?

In Java use a text component in a command like /tellraw, for example {"text":"Hello","color":"gold"}. In Bedrock use the section sign codes inside a rawtext array. This tool writes both for you.

Can I use any color in Minecraft text?

In Java you can use any hex color such as #ff8800 in text components since 1.16. Bedrock has no hex colors, only the named ones and its material colors.

What is the Minecraft font generator?

The game has one built-in font, and normal commands cannot change the letters. What you can change is color, bold, italic, underline, strikethrough and scrambled text. For a different font you need a resource pack, which this tool does not make.

What is tellraw?

It is a command that shows a message to chosen players, with full control of color and style. /tellraw @a writes it to everyone.

How do I show a big title on the screen?

Use /title @a title followed by the text component. Use subtitle for the smaller line below it and actionbar for the line above the hotbar.

Why does my command show an error?

The most common causes are a missing quote or bracket, cheats turned off, or a version that is older than 1.16. Copy the command exactly as the tool writes it.

Does it work in Java 1.21.5 and newer?

Yes. Since 1.21.5 text components are written in SNBT, and the output of this tool is valid in both the older JSON form and the new form.

Can I use the text on signs and in books?

Use the plain text component line from the tool. In Java 1.20 and newer signs and books accept it, but where you paste it depends on the command or tool you use.
